Luxury Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu
$2200 $1980
This 2 day tour, based in the Sacred Valley, centers around Peru’s rich cultural, archeological, and historical tapestry. Starting off in Chinchero, a little town nestled between Cusco and Urubamba, get ready to meander through the history of Chinchero’s famously quaint colonial church, the weaving communities of Peru, and the magical megalithic ruins of Inca civilization.
This tour also features the Maras Salt Mines and the Moray archeological ruins, both of which are a testament to the robustness of the engineering genius of Peru’s ancient indigenous civilizations. Get ready to witness some of the most diverse topography the Sacred Valley has to offer, from Moray’s sprawling green pastures cascading into agricultural terraces, to the mountain-side salt ponds of Maras.
This excursion also takes you on a full day’s tour of Machu Picchu, one of UNESCO’s most famous World Heritage Sites, submerging you in the history of Inca civilization. You’ll be left feeling awe struck and gobsmacked at the engineering genius of the Inca who, devoid of metal tools, the wheel, drafting animals, and mortar to seal the bricks that built the Machu Picchu citadel, were able to erect ancient infrastructure that have since weathered the storms of age and earthquakes to survive a 500 year history.
With the Sacred Valley lying not far off from Cusco, this is the ideal tour to go on if you’re looking to acclimatize to Cusco’s high altitudes before taking the giant leap to the ancient capital of the Incas.

After an 8.00 am pick up from your hotel and a 1 hour drive, we’ll arrive in Chinchero to tour the small Andean village hailed by the Incas as the birthplace of the rainbow. We’ll tour the Chinchero archeological center which features sacred Inca ruins and a pristine colonial church, surrounded by beguiling views of the misty mountains of Peru.
We’ll then visit Chinchero’s textile centers where you can imbibe in the ancient handloom traditions of Peru as the locals teach you the art of weaving alpaca wool into patterns idiosyncratic to Peruvian culture.
A 30 minute drive from there will take us to the Maras Salt Mines, a fantastical mosaic of over 3,000 salt ponds believed to have been manmade by the Wari civilization in 500 – 1100 AD. You could also purchase some Peruvian salt from the nearby shops.
Then it’s off for a 30 minute drive to the Moray archeological site. Shrouded in mystery with questions as to its original purpose, the Moray archeological site features 3 circular terraces lying in close proximity to one another within the Sacred Valley.
The day will draw to a close with the exploration of the cultural phenomenon that is Moray. You’ll then be driven to the Ollantaytambo train station. We’ll catch the 90 minute train ride to Machu Picchu town, also known as Aguas Calientes, where you’ll get to enjoy a delicious dinner at a local Peruvian restaurant. You’ll then be taken to your hotel to get a good night’s rest so you can wake up refreshed and rejuvenated in time for your tour of the Machu Picchu citadel.
After an early morning wakeup call and an energizing breakfast, we’ll check-out of the hotel and catch the first bus to Machu Picchu at 5:30 am just in time to witness the spectacular sunrise.
You’ll then be taken on a 2 – 3 hour tour of the Incan citadel in which our guide will take you on a journey through the ages, shedding light on the history, engineering genius, and lives of the ancient Incas.
You’ll then get to explore Peru’s urban areas independently and enjoy a little spontaneous exploration of Peru’s famed archeological site.
You’ll then hop on the bus and head down to Aguas Calientes, where you will reunite with our tour guide. You may then take a pitstop for lunch at a local restaurant (not included in the tour package) before hopping on a 2 hour train ride to Ollantaytambo. From here you will be chauffer driven to Cusco where you will be dropped off safely at your hotel.
