Dotted with churches and cathedrals across its cityscape, Puno preserves and celebrates its catholic faith and colonial history with pride and passion.
Lake Titicaca, bordered by Peru to the west and Bolivia to the east, is South America’s largest lake. It shelters 62 floating islands which are now home to over 1,200 Uros people. As legend has it, the floating islands were made by the Uros people out of reed some 3,700 years ago in an attempt to evade the Incans who sought to subjugate the Uros into slavery.
You’ll also get to explore the Uros and Taquile Islands on this 2 day tour, where you’ll be immersed in the life and culture of the Peruvians of the Puno district.
Itinerary
We’ll start day 1 of your Puno, Lake Titicaca, and Taquile Island Tour off with a visit to Huajsapata Hill from where you can glean stunning panoramic views of Puno Bay, Capachica Peninsula, and Chucuito Peninsula in the backdrop of the glittering city of Puno.
You’ll also get to visit the Municipal Dreyer Museum, where several artifacts predating the Inca rule are on exhibit.
The Puno, Lake Titicaca, and Taquile Island Tour will also take you to the Plaza de Armas of Puno, and the San Juan Bautista Church, also known as the sanctuary of the Virgin Candelaria, where the statue of the city’s patron saint resides.
We’ll then take a boat across Lake Titicaca to one of the Uros Islands, where you’ll be spending the night at the Uros Island lodge. You’ll get to spend the rest of your evening taking the Canadian canoes or Totora boat out for a ride, immersing yourself in relaxation, watching Lake Titicaca’s golden sunset, and enjoying delicious Peruvian cuisine as you bask in the resplendent serenity of the isle.
On day 2 of your Puno, Lake Titicaca, and Taquile Island Tour, you’ll be picked up from your hotel by our guide who’ll take you on a boat ride across the crystal clear waters of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, to the Island of Taquile.
Here, you’ll get to traipse along the island’s pristine and white sandy beaches before you visit the weaving community of Taquile, who will impart upon you the artistry of textile weaving, declared by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.
We’ll then travel to Santa Maria where you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome from its people and imbibe in their life, traditions, and culture, before heading back to Puno city.
