Beginning from the higher plains of the Sacred Valley, our Maras and Moray – Mountain Bike Trail (MBT) features the most sublime scenes of the Peruvian highlands. This exhilarating trail will take you on dirt roads enveloped by lush and expansive agricultural terraces unfurling from either side, while the eyes of the magnificent Urubamba Mountain Range watches over you in the vast distance. With easy-to-navigate sections along this route, our Maras and Moray – Mountain Bike Trail (MBT) offers high altitude cycling for beginners and experienced cyclists alike.

Arable and fertile, the Sacred Valley was hailed as one of the main centers of crop production during the age of the Inca Empire. One of the highlights of this trail is the exploration of the Inca ruins of Moray. Nestled in the center of the Sacred Valley, Moray is an archeological site which features cascading steps carved onto its topography and touted as having been an Incan agricultural laboratory.

Along this adventurous trail, you’ll also get to meet Quechua speaking Peruvians who fuel the lifeblood and longevity of Peruvian traditional culture, wearing Peru’s vibrant and colorful national dress, ponchos, dresses, blankets, sweaters, layered skirts, tunics, sombreros, and chullos among other native pieces.

As you pass through villages built during Peru’s colonial period, you’ll also see how ornate colonial aesthetic has seeped into Peru’s architectural makeup. You’ll get to explore the colorful local markets brimming with life, the spectacular Maras Salt Mines, and the Inca ruins of Moray.

Itinerary

After an 8:00 am pick up from your hotel followed by a 1 hour drive, we’ll start the day’s adventure off in Chinchero, where a community of over 20,000 Quechua speaking Peruvians live at an elevation of 3,800 m / 12,467 ft. above sea level.

Dotted with llamas, alpacas, guanacos, and vicuñas across its lavish plains  and famed for its thriving weaving community, Chinchero’s weavers will teach you all about the process of spinning and dyeing wool.

Then it’s off to the village of Cruz Pata where we’ll get geared up for the mountain bike trail and run through all the safety precautions before setting off for a fun filled day of biking through captivating landscapes and interesting topography.

Our first destination along the mountain bike trail is Moray, the archeological site featuring sprawling agricultural terraces that cascade into a single point. Reminiscent of Roman amphitheaters, Moray evidences the scientific inclinations and curiosity of the Incas as these terraces were mainly used to conduct agricultural experiments on a variety of vegetation.

After the immersive exploration of Moray, it’s back on our bikes for a ride to the Salt Mines of Maras. Made up of over 3,000 salt wells owned by 600 local families, the Salt Mines of Maras are a truly spectacular sight. Here, you’ll learn all about the process of salt extraction in the heart of Peru’s Sacred Valley.

A 30 minute descent down a llama path will take us to the bank of the Urubamba River where we’ll end the mountain bike trail and drive you back to Cusco to be safely dropped off at your hotel.
